3 Leadership Mistakes & How to Prevent Them

MISTAKE #1: BECOMING A “ME” PERSON, RATHER THAN A “WE” PERSON

HOW TO ADJUST YOUR MINDSET:

This issue ultimately stems from an unhealthy ego that values personal gain over the good of the team. Leaders should remember that their success is tied to the success of the people and groups they lead.

MISTAKE #2: ORDERING PEOPLE TO DO THINGS, RATHER THAN INFLUENCING THEM

HOW TO ADJUST YOUR MINDSET:

Ordering your team members to do things results in lower quality and forced results,
but influencing them brings them into the process. It enables them to buy in and want to do the tasks or projects before them, which means better results for the team as a whole.

MISTAKE #3: BURNING YOUR BRIDGES, RATHER THAN YOUR BOATS

HOW TO ADJUST YOUR MINDSET:

Work together to solve problems and face challenges, and your team will have the commitment necessary to “burn their boats” with you and let go of the idea of ever turning back. Then, moving forward, be sure to avoid destroying relationships (“burning bridges”) in the process.

Leadership involves an intentional daily practice of managing your emotions, attitudes, interactions, and actions. Take a moment to evaluate how you are doing in these areas. How are you leading through your attitudes and actions? What are you portraying to those you are influencing? What are people hearing and experiencing from you?
